Nio debuts firefly EV with battery swapping technology

On NIO day 2024, Chinese EV manufacturer Nio, launched the firefly brand with battery swapping technology. It has a preorder price of 148,000 RMB and can be reserved on the firefly app. It will launch in China in April 2025.

Firefly debuts as a testament to Nio’s decades long expertise in design, safety and energy efficiency. The NIO firefly will be up against competitors of BYD and Xpeng. Their core philosophy “Freedom to glow” emphasizes delivering vehicles that are intelligent, user-friendly, and roomy. The brand’s DNA is built on three key attributes: “vivid, thoughtful and solid.” Their logo takes inspiration from actual fireflies, symbolizing energy and unrestricted movement. The brand aims to stand out through distinctive design that creates a memorable presence on the streets.

The firefly brand is setting new benchmarks for safety in the small car category. They’ve prioritized safety by designing the car to meet the highest safety standards in both Chinese and European testing systems. What makes it stand out is its construction – they’ve used premium materials like high-strength steel and aluminum for over 83% of the car’s body, which is more commonly seen in larger, more expensive vehicles. The car’s body is exceptionally rigid, with best-in-class torsional stiffness, and they’ve added extra protection with double impact beams in the front doors. Essentially, they’re bringing high-end safety features typically found in larger cars down to the small car segment.

Nio has also developed an ecosystem of charging and battery swapping infrastructure, helping to ensure the high energy efficiency of the car and ease of use to consumers. The firefly will usher in a new era of small smart high end electric car for active urban lifestyle users.
